93 Nissan 240 SX, Clutch Replacement

Q: I own a ‘93 Nissan 240 SX. The clutch hasn’t failed yet but is getting close. I want to replace it myself to save money and get the knowledge. I’ve got the Chilton book and the process is very labor intensive. Do you have any short cuts or tricks that might be helpful? It has me disconnecting the drive shaft starter and exhaust just to lower the transmission to gain access to the clutch assembly. Any tips?

A: Replacing the cultch in any drive vehicle is a labor-intensive job. In your case it is easier due to the vehicle being a rear wheel drive. That transmission configuration requires less specialized equipment. But, you should also know, that you may need a tool or 2 that are not found in the home tool box. As for short cuts they are far and few between when it comes to removing and installing a transmission in your vehicle. You have to get it all out of the way to properly install the new clutch. Be careful, use safety stands and secure the vehicle correctly, transmissions are heavy, but not a heavy as a car.
