ALLDATA has been the technology leader in the aftermarket for
more than 28 years. In January, the company launched ALLDATA
Mobile – an innovative product designed to drive greater
efficiencies and profitability throughout a shop’s operations. In
a previous ALLDATA News article, Paul Marshall, Mobile Product
Developer, discussed the development process, release, launch,
and vision behind the application.
When the initial Android version of ALLDATA Mobile was
introduced, it offered basic diagnostics. In this follow-up
interview, we asked Marshall how the application has evolved and
what new features have been introduced to provide a deeper, more
engaged repair experience for the shop. Here’s what he had to
ALLDATA: So, I understand there are some
additional features included in the product since we last
spoke. How will these improvements benefit a shop?
Paul: Yes. Since we launched in January, we’ve
released five updates to ALLDATA Mobile, including enhancements
to both repair information access and vehicle connectivity.
We are continually improving access to our repair information.
Now, search results are instant and grouped by information
type, such as:
Service and Repair
Parts and Labor, etc.
‘Information is displayed as the user types it in; no more
using a Submit Button. This is a considerable improvement
over the previous version, and will reduce time spent searching
for needed information. We have also added Bookmarking of
VIN Barcode Scanner
Another new convenience feature is our VIN barcode scanner. For
older vehicles that do not support VIN access through the OBDII
port, users can select the Scan Icon, aim the tablet camera at
the vehicles barcode, then decode the VIN, while never losing
the connection to the vehicle.
Freeze Frame Data
To further expand diagnostic capabilities, ALLDATA Mobile
offers the ability to access Freeze Frame data and save it to
the users account under the connected vehicle’s VIN. As with P
Codes, we included a direct link from the Freeze Frame
information to the associated diagnostic article.
We also added Emissions Readiness Monitors for pre-checking a
vehicle’s emissions system.
ALLDATA: What features do you feel will most
excite the shop owner and technician?
Paul: The most exciting thing about ALLDATA
Mobile is not any one piece, but the whole. ALLDATA’s OEM
information and the repair industry are natural fits with the
potential of tablet/app technology. With all the compiled
features of ALLDATA Mobile, including linking vehicle data to
ALLDATA Information and having the ability to save diagnostics
data tied to VIN within a user’s account, the possibilities
with this product line are tremendous.
ALLDATA: How do you determine what to add
Paul: Development is constant. While our
primary vision is linking vehicle diagnostics data to ALLDATA
repair Information, we continually reach out to monitor our
customers’ pain points. This is why we accelerated the VIN
scanning capabilities. As simple as it sounds, there is a
measurable amount of time spent on the accurate selection of a
vehicle’s year, make, model and engine.
ALLDATA: What were some of the challenges you
faced while creating this new version?
Paul: Our main challenge has been developing
diagnostic features compatible with the tens of thousands of
OBDII vehicles on the road. We need to ensure that a new
feature will work on all these different platforms.
ALLDATA: What problems will ALLDATA Mobile
Marshall: Our goal is to optimize the role
ALLDATA repair information plays in the repair process,
including a shop’s scarcity of time and the need to consolidate
tools required to repair vehicles. We need to offer a tool that
increases bay volume and consolidates diagnostics capabilities
and repair information needs, while building a historical
diagnostics database to assist with future repairs.
ALLDATA: What’s next?
Marshall: We will continue to add increased
diagnostics features beyond the basic level, which includes the
ability to access non-standard Diagnostic Trouble Codes. Also,
we are in the process of integrating ALLDATA’s Community and
the ability to search confirmed fixes, or submit repair
questions to our in-house diagnostics experts.
Please stay tuned. Our development team is constantly
responding to the needs of our subscribers while adding
considerable value to ALLDATA Mobile.
ALLDATA: The vehicle repair business is
changing for the better, and ALLDATA Mobile is one reason why.
Moving cars through the shop is one thing. Making sure those
cars are repaired promptly and properly is another.
Having all the data on any given vehicle — data that is
portable, easily accessible, searchable and effortlessly stored
on a vehicle – is the best!
