Cumberland, Rhode Island, founded in 1746, is situated along the
Blackstone River, just eight tenths of a mile from the
Massachusetts state line. It’s a small city – approximate
population, 32,000 – within densely populated Providence County.
Mutter Motors’ roots go back to the 1930’s as Cross Street Auto
Sales in nearby Central Falls. The dealership’s slogan was, “We
may be on a hill, but we’re on the level.”

In it’s current form, Mutter Motors is a third-generation,
family-owned business, with a small used car lot and three
service bays. The five employees include three technicians who –
thanks to manufacturers’ repair information from ALLDATA – solve
any problem that arrives in the shop.
Mutter Motors has serving the vehicle owners of Cumberland since
1968. That was 20 years before ALLDATA solved the problem of
repairing and servicing those increasingly complex vehicles.
When ALLDATA did become available in the marketplace, the Mutter
family quickly realized its value. “We were one of ALLDATA’s
original customers,” says Jeff Mutter. Back then, the system came
loaded on an Atari computer. Today, Jeff and his technicians
access ALLDATA online.
ALLDATA has proven its value time and again for Mutter Motors.”I
don’t know how we would get along without it,” says Jeff.
“ALLDATA is fast for finding information. The wiring diagrams are
great. We use it for estimating too.”
“TSBs save us a lot of time and money. It’s one of the tools we
can’t do without.”
Up-to-date TSBs have proven particularly valuable to the shop.
Jeff illustrates this with a story that shows why customers stay
loyal to Mutter Motors. “A woman came in with a transmission
problem. The first thing I did was pull the TSBs on ALLDATA and
we found her problem. I sent her to the dealer, and the fix was
on them. It would have been a $4,000 – $5,000 job. We didn’t get
any of it, but it was good for long-term customer relations.”
Although Mutter Motors did not benefit directly from this
situation, they made a friend – a friend who will certainly tell
others about Mutter Motors.
