Cologne, Germany – 18th June 2026 – A 2001 Peugeot 406 Estate arrived at a workshop after several unsuccessful repair attempts had failed to resolve persistent electrical faults. With multiple components already replaced and repair costs mounting, the vehicle was effectively facing a final diagnostic assessment before being deemed uneconomical to repair.

The vehicle presented with two key symptoms: the battery charge warning lamp remained illuminated despite the charging system appearing to function correctly, while an inoperative heater blower rendered the vehicle virtually unusable. The challenge stemmed from the vehicle's position in a transitional period for PSA Group electrical architecture. During this time, Peugeot and Citroën were moving from conventional wiring systems to multiplexed networks and CAN bus technology, resulting in variations in component locations and circuit design between seemingly identical models.

Initial investigation using the OEM wiring diagrams available through ALLDATA Repair identified an engine-running relay within the affected circuit. However, while the diagram confirmed its existence, its physical location was not immediately apparent.

Armed with this information, the technician quickly located the relay and performed bypass testing, immediately restoring system operation and confirming the fault path.

Further testing verified the integrity of the vehicle's wiring, narrowing the diagnosis to the alternator despite multiple previous replacements. With confidence in the diagnostic process and supporting OEM information, a replacement alternator was installed, permanently resolving both faults.

Without access to the original OEM wiring information and supporting manufacturer documentation, the workshop could have faced further unnecessary component replacement, additional labour costs and continued uncertainty. Instead, the root cause was identified efficiently, allowing a vehicle that was close to being scrapped to be returned to service.
