Ford Transit No Start – Dash Lights Flashing

Vehicle: 2017 Ford Transit 350, L5-3.2L DSL Turbo, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 64,755 miles

Problem: The owner brought his Transit to the shop because the malfunction indicator light (MIL) came on. There were no drivability issues.

Case Details: While in the shop, the technician noted that the door chime made a stuttering sound. The battery and oil warning lights were flashing, and the headlights sometimes flashed. There was no starter engagement with the key in the start position.

If the technician held the key in the start position, the lights would stop flashing and the chime would stop. At some odd times, the engine would start but shut off right away.

Other times, the lights would stop flashing, and the chime sounded normal. When that happened, the technician could start the engine, but it would shut off right away, all the dash lights would flash, and the chime stuttering noise returned.

The technician connected a Ford IDS, which told him that the powertrain control module (PCM) was blank and asked if he wanted to program it. He tried to program it, but the scan tool just showed an error. He scanned all modules for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) with an ALLDATA scan tool. The only one he found was DTC P0607 - Control Module Performance.

At this point, the technician decided to call ALLDATA Tech-Assist for some diagnostic ideas. The ALLDATA Tech-Assist consultant advised that, although the PCM could certainly be bad, the technician should start with some basic tests. He said to begin by load-testing the powers and grounds to the PCM.

NOTE: Power and ground issues can cause corruption issues in the PCM. If all the power and grounds were good, then the PCM was bad.

The technician checked all the power and grounds at the PCM. They were all good.

Confirmed Repair: He replaced and programmed the PCM. Afterward, the vehicle operated normally. Fixed!
