VW Golf No Start After Engine Swap

Vehicle: 2016 Volkswagen Golf (AU1), L4-1.8L Turbo (CXBA), Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 108,265 miles

Problem: The owner of this VW Golf installed a used engine and then it wouldn’t start. After spending countless hours trying to figure out the problem, he towed it to the shop. He was told when he bought the engine that it had low miles on it.

Case Details: The technician connected a scan tool and pulled the following diagnostic trouble code (DTC): P0016 - Crankshaft Position - Camshaft Position Correlation Bank 1 Sensor A. He inspected the harness and connectors to the crankshaft and camshaft position sensors and tested for individual signals from both sensors. Everything looked good, so he called ALLDATA Tech-Assist for some guidance.

The Tech-Assist consultant advised scoping the camshaft and crankshaft signals to make sure they were in sync. If they were out of sync, then remove the valve cover to inspect the timing chain.

The technician scoped the sensors as suggested and found them out of sync. The timing chain on the used motor was worn and stretched badly.

Confirmed Repair: The shop installed another used engine from a reliable source. That motor started right up and ran great. Problem Solved!
