Vehicle: 1999 BMW 328i Convertible (E36), L6-2793cc 2.8L DOHC (M52), Manual Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 226,650

Problem: The owner’s concern was that the driver's power window was inoperative and stuck open. The motor was replaced twice already by another shop, but the plastic drive gears kept stripping out.

Case Details: The technician removed the door panel to check the window regulator for smooth operation. The regulator wasn’t jammed and moved easily. Since he couldn’t find any significant issues, he called ALLDATA Tech-Assist for some diagnostic advice.

The Tech-Assist consultant said that the window was not likely initialized after the motor was replaced, and that could damage the plastic drive gears in the motor. He advised performing a window and regulator initialization before retesting the power window operation.

Confirmed Repair: The technician performed the initialization procedure on the door window and regulator before evaluating the operation. The widow traveled up and down numerous times with no issues. Problem solved!
