Humpty Dumpty Had Nothing on This Clutch

Owners of certain 2015-2018 Ford Focus and 2013-2014 Fusion models may find their clutch is cracking under pressure. According to Ford Safety Recall 18S07, excessive clutch slip can overheat the assembly, causing unusual noise, an odor, smoke or an engine speed flare accompanied by a loss of power. If the condition goes unaddressed, the pressure plate can crack and eventually fracture. All the king’s horses and all the king’s men might want to stand back: A fractured pressure plate can damage the transmission, and a resulting fluid leak could create a fire risk if it reaches an ignition source.

Ford instructs dealers to reprogram the powertrain control module and test for clutch slip on affected Focus models, replacing the clutch assembly if it fails the test. On affected Fusion models, dealers replace the clutch assembly. Fortunately, Ford can put this Humpty Dumpty back together again at no charge to the owner.

The detailed repair procedure is included in the TSB.
