Technology Adoption Study Reveals Challenges

Today’s automotive repair and collision shops rely on technology more than ever—but that reliance is also creating new challenges. According to a new State of the Market: Technology Adoption Within Automotive Repair Shops report, sponsored by AutoZone, ALLDATA, and RATCHET+WRENCH, independent shops now use a wide range of digital tools to keep daily operations moving.

On average, repair shops use nearly seven different technologies to manage their business, from online parts ordering and service information systems to electronic customer communication and repair order tools.

At the same time, shop owners clearly recognize the importance of technology: 70% agree or strongly agree that adopting technology is crucial to staying competitive in today’s market. Together, these findings point to an important reality for repair and collision shops—technology is no longer optional, but managing too many disconnected tools can slow teams down instead of helping them move faster.

The Hidden Cost of Tool Sprawl

The report shows that most shops have embraced digital solutions. Nearly nine in 10 shops use online parts ordering systems, 75% rely on online service information, and 69% communicate with customers electronically via email or text messaging. Electronic repair order systems are also widely adopted, with 66% of shops using them, with the majority reporting high satisfaction.

But adoption across many categories means technicians, service advisors, and owners are often jumping between multiple platforms just to complete everyday tasks. The report also highlights gaps: Fewer than half of shops use digital inspection sheets or online appointment scheduling, even though these tools can improve efficiency and customer trust. This mix of high adoption and underutilization suggests that shops aren’t short on technology—they’re short on integration.

When workflows are spread across too many systems, shops risk duplicated data entry, missed details, slower approvals, and frustrated employees. In a fast-paced environment where bays need to stay full and customers expect real-time updates, inefficiency can quickly become a competitive disadvantage.

Why Streamlining Matters—Now More Than Ever

Vehicle complexity continues to rise, and customer expectations are following suit. The report notes that shop owners overwhelmingly believe technology is necessary to remain relevant, even as many feel unprepared for the next wave of vehicle innovation. To stay competitive, shops need technology that works together, not in silos. Streamlining tech tools helps shops:

  • Reduce clicks and manual tasks for advisors and technicians
  • Improve visibility into jobs, parts, and technician productivity
  • Communicate more clearly and consistently with customers
  • Scale operations without adding administrative burden
