Owners of BMW X3 and X5 models up to 2019 have reported exterior lights intermittently flashing on and off — a phenomenon that reminds drivers that BMWs do, in fact, come equipped with turn signals. BMW Service Information Bulletin SI B63 07 21 addresses this condition when fault code 80442A is stored, pointing to a potential issue within the headlight rotary switch LIN circuit.

BMW notes that this fault code can be stored without any functional lighting concern, often caused by minor voltage fluctuations, meaning switch replacement is not always warranted. However, when a customer complaint is present and FC 80442A is confirmed, the bulletin identifies a faulty headlight adjustment switch as the likely cause. Updated switch contact design was introduced in June 2019.

With the lighting issue resolved, owners can now focus on locating the turn signal stalk while driving.

The detailed repair procedure is included in the TSB.
