Rear End Rumbles: When Your Nissan Needs to Work Things Out
TRENDING TSB
Owners of various AWD Nissan models, including the Murano and Pathfinder, may notice abnormal noise, vibration, or a binding feeling from the rear differential. This occurs during low-speed turns when the rear end starts acting a little unsettled. Nissan Technical Service Bulletin NTB10-029I covers this condition and confirms that not every rearend disturbance is cause for immediate concern.
Nissan explains that SNOW and OFF-ROAD modes increase AWD coupler engagement, which can create a binding sensation on dry pavement. Translation: Sometimes your rear end is just working through something. Tire mismatches can also trigger similar symptoms, so before assuming internal issues, make sure all four tires are in sync.
If the noise continues, the bulletin outlines how to isolate whether the issue is in the electric-controlled coupling or the final drive and advises against replacing the entire assembly without proper diagnosis. Once sorted, things should quiet down… and your rear end can go back to keeping it together in public.
The detailed repair procedure is included in the TSB.
