Vehicle: 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser, L4-2.4L, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 89,005

Problem: The vehicle was in the shop for a headlight replacement. After replacing the passenger headlamp bulb, the engine would crank over but not start. The headlamp functioned briefly then went out.

Case Details: The technician connected a scan tool and retrieved the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs):

  • P0463 - Fuel Level Sensor Circuit High Input
  • P0499 - Evaporative Emission System Vent Control Circuit High

He tried clearing the DTCs, but they returned immediately. The technician called an ALLDATA Tech-Assist consultant for some advice. The consultant said that those DTCs may be caused by a faulty ground connection. While looking at a wiring diagram he noticed that the headlight shared the same ground (G105) as the fuel pump module. He suggested testing the ground circuit at the headlight connector.

Sure enough, there was power, but no ground at the headlight connector. He located broken wires at the G105 ground point.

Confirmed Repair: The technician repaired the broken ground wires and cleared the DTCs. The engine started and the headlight worked fine. NOTE: G105 is in front of the passenger strut tower, above the headlight assembly. Fixed!
