Dodge Ram 2500 Blows White Smoke Only at 60mph
Vehicle: 2006 Dodge Ram 2500, 4WD, L6-5.9L DSL Turbo, VIN C, Manual Transmission/Transaxle
Mileage: 198,019
Problem: The truck was towed in for a no-start condition. The technician found the #5 injector was bad. He replaced #5 and #6 injectors and the fuel filter. NOTE: The other four injectors were replaced previously. After the repairs, the engine started right up, but on the test drive, the technician noticed a lot of white smoke with blue tint coming out of the tailpipe at a steady 2000 rpm or about 60mph. The engine started fine and did not smoke at idle or when revving the engine in Neutral or Park. The smoke stopped immediately when accelerating or when decelerating. When smoking, the technician noticed sounds like an injector tick or rattle, but it also went away either by accelerating or decelerating.
Case Details: The customer said the smoke issue wasn't there before. The technician tried replacing the injectors with new ones, but the problem remained. Next, he adjusted valve lash then installed a new fuel control actuator on the injection pump. The problem still wasn’t resolved. At this point, he called an ALLDATA Tech-Assist consultant for some diagnostic advice.
The consultant advised comparing injector numbers with the ones that originally came out. The technician said that the old injector nozzles had 5516 on them, but the new ones were 5500.
Confirmed Repair: Based on that information, the consultant suggested disconnecting those two injectors then going on a test drive to see if the smoking stopped. The technician disconnected the injectors at the valve cover harness. On the test drive the smoking stopped so he ordered two new injectors from a different source. The numbers on the new injectors matched the old ones. He installed the new injectors, and the problem was finally solved. Fixed!
