Problem: While the owner was driving around town, the engine suddenly died. When she tried to restart it, the starter would not crank the engine over. Additionally, she heard clicking noises from under the hood.

Details: The technician noticed that the starter would crank when battery power was directly applied to the starter solenoid. He also noticed that the blower motor and fuel pump relays were clicking constantly when the ignition switch was in the ON position.

When the technician called ALLDATA Tech-Assist, the consultant suggested checking the Integrated Power Module (IPM) for water intrusion, any physical damage and the power and grounds to the IPM. He also suggested checking IPM connector C3, pin 14 and connector C4, pin 2 for battery power when the key was turned to the start position.

When the technician tested for power on those pins, he found no power output on pin 2. Since the power inputs and grounds to the IPM tested good, then the logical conclusion was that the IPM was bad.

Confirmed Repair: After the technician replaced the IPM, normal electrical system operation was restored, relays no longer clicked and the engine started and ran normally. Problem solved!
