Ford F150 Intermittent No Start / No Communication
Vehicle: 2011 Ford F150, 4WD, V6-3.5L, Turbo Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
Mileage: 162,966 miles
Problem: The owner had his F150 towed to the shop because the engine would crank over but wouldn't start.
Case Details: After connecting a scan tool, the technician found no communication with the powertrain control module (PCM) and there were all types of warning error messages: low oil pressure, over temperature, advance Trac, battery and starting system fault. There were no diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs), and the malfunction indicator light (MIL) was off.
An ALLDATA Tech-Assist consultant suggested checking all power and grounds to the PCM. The technician found no power to the PCM, so he checked fuse #75 (25A PCM). While testing the fuse, he noticed that the power would come on when he wiggled the fuse with the test probe. He pulled the fuse out and found there were black contact spots on the fuse legs and the fuse box terminal contacts.
Confirmed Repair: The technician cleaned and tightened the fuse box terminal contacts and replaced the fuse. All communication with the PCM was restored, and the engine started and ran fine. Fixed!
