Mitsubishi Outlander Battery Won’t Charge
Vehicle: 2020 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, 2WD, L4-2.0L (4B11), Automatic Transmission/Transaxle
Mileage: 77,112 Miles
Problem: The vehicle’s battery discharges while running or sitting. A brand new known good alternator, which had been bench tested three times, was not charging the battery. If the vehicle was left idling, it would run the battery down then the engine would die. There was no parasitic current draw on the battery.
Case Details: A call to ALLDATA Tech-Assist provided some diagnostic direction. The consultant asked if there was battery voltage at the alternator B+ terminal. He also asked about B+ from the 7.5amp fuse to Pin #2 (brown) wire at the 4-pin connector on the alternator. He told the technician to use a DVOM to check voltage on the alternator B+ terminal/cable (white) and Sense wire, pin2 (brown). Both should have B+, key on or off. With the key on, the technician should have 12v on the field wire, Pin4 (violet). He also advised load-testing the remaining wires.
The technician quickly found the problem: an open fusible link in the high-current B+ circuit between the battery and alternator.
Confirmed Repair: The technician replaced the fusible link then retested the charging system. Everything workied as designed. Easy fix!
