Transit has passive aggressive back-seat driver

There are some noises you never want to hear coming from the rear of your vehicle. For owners of certain 2015-2022 Ford Transit vans, a mysterious moan at highway speeds is apparently one of them. According to Ford Technical Service Bulletin 22-2271, certain rear-wheel-drive, single-rear-wheel Transit models may produce a boom, hum, or moan from the rear between 70 and 90 mph, depending on axle ratio. Ford says the culprit may be a second-order driveline frequency traveling through the rear driveshaft and axle and into the body through the leaf springs.
Fortunately, your Transit isn't just complaining about another long day on the road. Ford instructs technicians to first inspect the driveshaft, U-joints, center bearings, and slip-yoke splines for damage or wear and verify the concern using an NVH analyzer. If everything checks out and the moaning continues, the fix is to install a torsional damper on the axle pinion flange. Just don't mistake the moan for a vibration. Ford specifically notes that the damper won't fix one.
