Ford Escape No Start After Used Engine Installed

Vehicle: 2018 Ford Escape, 2WD, L4-1.5L Turbo, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 133,009 miles

Problem: After installing a used engine that had 30K miles on it, the engine would crank but not start. The old engine did start and run prior to the engine swap.

Case Details: The technician checked fuel pressure, spark and the crank shaft position sensor. All seemed to be working normally. NOTE: The engine came with timing cover on, untouched. There were no relevant diagnostic trouble codes. The technician tried removing the original crank sensor, coils and spark plugs from the original engine and installing them on the replacement engine. Still no start. He checked the fuse box in the engine compartment and under passenger side footwell area. All the fuses were good. He tried spraying starting fluid into the intake. No luck. It was time to call ALLDATA Tech-Assist.

The Tech-Assist consultant asked if the used engine came with the harmonic balancer already installed, because the harmonic balancer does not have a keyway so if the center bolt had been loosened, the timing would be off.

The technician checked the harmonic balancer bolt. It was loose and the harmonic balancer had moved.

Confirmed Repair: The technician set the pulley in the correct position by using the Ford special pulley alignment tools. The engine started right up. Fixed!
