Vehicle: 2013 Ford F250, 4WD, Super Duty, V8-6.7L DSL Turbo, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 177,128 miles

Problem: The customer’s concern was that the malfunction indicator light (MIL) came on while driving, along with the “service soon” wrench and a “drive to clean exhaust system” message.

Case Details: The technician hooked up his scanner and pulled the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs):

  • P00BD-Mass or Volume Air Flow A, Circuit Range/Performance - Air Flow Too High
  • P0299- Turbocharger/Supercharger A, Under-Boost Condition
  • P0420- Catalyst System Below Efficiency
  • P2074- Manifold Absolute Pressure/Mass Air Flow-Throttle Position Correlation at Higher Load
  • P2457- Exhaust Gas Recirculation Cooler A, Efficiency Below Threshold
  • P2463- Particulate Filter Restriction Soot Accumulation

When the technician took the vehicle for a test drive, he could hear a loud boost leak, so he decided to start with the boost issue. He inspected the charge air cooler (CAC) and found that one tube had an obvious crack in it and the other pipe was leaking boost at the quick-connect O-ring.

Confirmed Repair: After replacing both CAC pipes with O-rings, the power and boost came back. The technician cleared DTCs and drove the vehicle for about 30 minutes on the freeway. No DTCs returned, and the engine ran perfectly. Simple fix!
