Genesis G80 Starts Only When Warm

Vehicle: 2017 Genesis G80, AWD (DH), V6-3.8L, Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 116,565 Miles

Problem: The customer’s concern was that the engine wouldn’t start when it’s cold (around 20 degrees) and the car is left outside overnight. The engine would not crank. But, when the car was parked in the garage, the engine started every time, even if it had not been moved for multiple days. If the car was left outside, when the temperature warmed up to about 40 degrees, the engine started without fail.

Case Details: The battery was new, but the technician ran it through all the standard tests. It passed with no issues.

Next, he went outside and sat in the car for three to five minutes scanning for diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) while the vehicle would not start. After about five minutes with the key on, engine off, he was able to find two DTCs:

  • B2810-00 - Central Gateway Issue NOTE: B2810-00 is set when CAN communication is normal, but AVM ("AROUND VIEW UNIT/PARKING GUIDE UNIT") cannot transmit C_CAN message to "GATEWAY" for 10 seconds.
  • B1112-16 - Occupant Classification Sensor NOTE: The Passenger-side "BodySense” sensor ECU sets DTC B1112-16 and turns warning light on if voltage below threshold value is detected.

There were no DTCs stored in any other modules. Everything in the electrical system powered up, but the starter would not even click until the temperature warmed.

It was time to call ALLDATA Tech-Assist. The consultant listened to everything the technician had tried so far and advised bypassing the starter relay or performing a bench test with the starter removed from the car after it’s been left outside overnight.

Confirmed Repair: The technician bench-tested the starter in the morning outside while it was still cold. The starter would not spin over. He replaced the starter and the problem was solved. He cleared the DTCs and returned the car to the customer. Fixed!
