Dodge Ram Intermittently Runs Rough
Vehicle: 2021 Dodge Ram 1500, 4WD, V6-3.6L eTorque, MHEV Automatic
Mileage: 66,552 Miles
Problem: The owner dropped this Ram off at the shop with the malfunction indicator light (MIL) on and said that the engine ran rough intermittently.
Case Details: After connecting a scan tool, the technician found the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs):
- P0300 - Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
- P000C - Bank 2 Intake Camshaft 1 Position Slow Response
The technician checked the oil condition and level, which appeared normal. To avoid spending additional diagnostic time, he called an ALLDATA Tech-Assist consultant for guidance. The consultant asked to verify that the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) was seeing that the actual camshaft position matched the desired camshaft position (see test procedure below).
Test procedure: With a scan tool, monitor and compare the Intake Cam 1 actual position with the Intake Cam 1 desired position. After comparing the two values at idle, check and compare the values at several different engine speeds using the following steps.
- Raise the engine speed quickly and hold steady for up to 30 seconds.
- Lower the engine speed and hold steady at a level above idle (off lock pin) for up to 30 seconds.
- Repeat the above steps multiple times and allow the engine to come back to idle while monitoring the actual position value to verify that the phaser is returning to lock pin position.
NOTE: On occasion, a small piece of debris or metal chip can get lodged in the oil control valve (OCV) causing the spool valve to stick. The contamination can either dislodge on its own or when the PCM is running a cleaning procedure on the OCV, which can cause an intermittent “camshaft position slow response” condition that may no longer be present.
The technician performed the procedure and found that the oil control valve on bank 2 Intake Cam 1 was sticking intermittently and not returning to the lock pin position.
Confirmed Repair: The technician replaced the bank 2 intake oil control valve and the Variable Valve Timing (VVT) solenoid. Fixed!
