Toyota Tundra Will Not Shift into Overdrive

Vehicle: 2010 Toyota Tundra, 2WD, V8-5.7L (3UR-FE), Automatic Transmission/Transaxle

Mileage: 187,009 miles

Problem: The owner’s concern was that the transmission would shift into fourth gear but not overdrive. The malfunction indicator light (MIL) and the traction control lights were on.

Case Details: The technician found the following diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs):

  • P032D: Knock sensor (for Bank 1 Sensor 2) open/short (High voltage)
  • C1201 Engine Control System Malfunction. This code basically indicates that there is a DTC present in the ECM.

Editor’s Note: When any of the following DTCs are set - P0327, P0328, P0332, P0333, P032C, P032D, P033C and P033D - the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) will enter fail-safe mode. During fail-safe mode, the ignition timing will be reduced to its minimum advance, and transmission shifting will be limited, including disabling overdrive.

After clearing the DTCs and test driving, both P032D and C1201 immediately returned.

A call to ALLDATA Tech-Assist provided some diagnostic direction. The consultant said that very often he sees rodent damage to the knock sensor wires on these trucks and that ALLDATA Repair provided some comprehensive knock sensor testing procedures.

Once the engine head covers were removed and the technician could see the knock sensor wiring, it was obvious rodents had been feasting on the wiring.

Repair: The technician repaired the wiring and cleared the DTCs. A good test drive confirmed the DTCs did not return. Problem solved!
